SPRECKLES TEMPLE OF MUSIC

Construction of the Temple of Music was completed and dedication ceremony was held on September 5, 1900.  Over 75,000 people attended.  Funds for the project were donated by Claus Spreckles.  The structure was built of Colusa sandstone.  The Contours was designed to serve crowds as large as 20,000, but the surrounding area holds many more for standing room only.  Musicians from John Philip Sousa to Pavarotti and the grateful Dead have performed on the band shell.  by Ernie L. Kapphahn
